About The Name
Choices & Changes is a private practice. When I first decided to go into private practice it was with the
intention of expanding into a clinic or group practice, but that did not happen. The work that I was doing
and continue to do is all about a person's choice to change, so I kept the name. I believe we are
empowered by our choices and that life is a learning experience.
About The Person
I am a Doctor of Psychology, licenced as a Professional Counselor. I have been in private practice
since 1997 providing counseling services to adults with a wide array of issues. My expertise over the
years has been in such areas as substance abuse, anger management, stress management, conflict
resolution, and trauma intervention.  I am fully trained in the use of EMDR for trauma and performance
enhancement. I am a
Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, and a National Board Certified
Counselor.

Before completing my studies in clinical psychology, I was employed as a nurse working in medical-
surgical nursing for the most part, then in substance abuse. Upon completing my doctoral studies I was
employed as a substance abuse counselor for adolescents and their families. It was my nursing
experience that helped define what I actually wanted to pursue as my career. It seemed to me at the
time, that paper work was more important than the emotional needs of the patient. I understand the
importance of good patient care and the need for the technical side to be expert, but it was the
emotional side that drew me toward psychology instead of nursing.

In 2000 I moved from the area, and relocated in New Orleans, La. I was employed as the Clinical
Director at
Bridge House, a 135 bed residential substance abuse treatment facility for homeless and
indigent men. In 2002 I returned to the Kansas City area and reestablished my private practice in the
Northland.

In 2005, under a grant though
SAMHSA, I went back to the place of my youth, New Orleans, after the
devastation of Katrina as a team leader of 14 professionals from across the United States. It was an
experience that I cannot adequately describe. The word surreal comes to mind. Crisis and trauma
counseling took on a whole new meaning. Keep New Orleans in your prayers and help out if you can.
